Adaptation issues were at the forefront of the paris agreement. Collective long-term adaptation objectives are included in the agreement and countries must be accountable for their adaptation measures, making adaptation a parallel element of the mitigation agreement. [46] Adaptation objectives focus on improving adaptive capacity, resilience and vulnerability limitation. [47] How each country is on track to meet its obligations under the Paris Agreement can be constantly monitored online (via the Climate Action Tracker[95] and the climate clock). On October 5, 2016, when the agreement reached enough signatures to cross the threshold, U.S. President Barack Obama said, “Even if we achieve all the goals… we will only get to part of where we need to go. He also said that “this agreement will help delay or avoid some of the worst consequences of climate change.” It will help other nations reduce their emissions over time and set bolder goals as technology progresses, all under a strong transparency system that will allow each nation to assess the progress of all other nations. [27] [28] No responsible leader can bring workers – and people – of their country into this debilitating and enormous disadvantage. The fact that the Paris Agreement is hampering the United States, while allowing some of the world`s largest polluters, should dispel any doubt as to why foreign lobbyists want to link and bind our great country to this agreement: it is about giving their country an economic advantage over the United States. That will not happen as long as I am president. I am sorry. (Applause) If the obstructionists want to end up with me, let`s make them non-obstructionists. We`re all going to sit down together, and we`re going to get back to the deal.

And we will do it well, and we will not close our factories, and we will not lose our jobs. And we will meet with the Democrats and all the people who represent either the Paris agreement or something we can do, much better than the Paris agreement. And I think the people of our country will be delighted, and I think the people of the world will be delighted. But until we did, we came out of the agreement. The initial commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol was extended until 2012. This year, at COP18 in Doha, Qatar, delegates agreed to extend the agreement until 2020 (without some industrialized countries withdrawing). They also reaffirmed their commitment made at COP17 in Durban, South Africa, in 2011, to create a new global climate treaty by 2015 that would require all major emitters not included in the Kyoto Protocol, such as China, India and the United States, to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. The new treaty – which was to become the Paris Agreement – was to completely replace the Kyoto Protocol by 2020. However, the Paris agreement came into force earlier than expected in November 2016.
